Winding Down....It is not happening!

Well we have been so busy busy that I have been neglecting this blog.  We are in the process of putting up new fencing for our new additions to the farm....3 cows!  This place is going to seem a whole lot smaller soon I am guessing.  We had a friend store his back hoe on the property so we took advantage and we have been working like mad people.  We dug a large watering hole for the animals so we do not have to fill up containers every few days.  Matteo is now 4 months old and he is all smiles...a very happy baby....must be all the fresh air out here!  The weather said it could snow tomorrow and we still have not dug up all of our carrots & beets.  Everyday my goal is to get out there and dig them up but other things keep coming up and it is almost too late.  The days are very short & the nights are cold now, we have our wood stove burning all of the time now.  I have a feeling it is going to be a long & cold winter this year but we wont mind a little down time is good now and then!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone

Today is Turkey Day!!  We celebrated last night & we will celebrate again tonight.  We cooked fresh Turkey from our farm & it was fabulous.  The days are getting very short & the nights are very cool, we think it may freeze soon.  We are busy running around the farm trying to get everything winterized from the irrigation to sheltering all of the animals.  Our feild is still full of veggies & fruits that have not yet been collected as we are short handed due to baby Matteo (who would ever guess how much work a baby actually is)!  With all that we pick we also are collecting the seeds to put aside and sort & store in the winter months. And when we are finished with the field we are letting our Big Pig root through the rest.  Sesen Farms is located right beside a major river here in the Okanagan & we are also witnessing the largest salmon run ever recorded.  As we walk along the river we can see many fish in the side pools and they are a crimson color - a very beautiful sight.  There have been many bear and coyote sightings because of the salmon run as well.   On a comical note, there have been many sightings of people stopping their cars or bikes on road 9 which runs right by the farm to take pictures of our Egg Mobile.  Many many people stop to photograph our van (which serves as a mobile chicken coop).  Now that we have had the Egg Mobile for quite some time, we have to say it is amazing.  First of all we did not have to build a chicken coop which really saved time & second of all the chickens really seem to like it & it is easy to move from place to place.  We may be in the market for another camperized van soon so we can double our egg layiing flock.  The busy busy days are winding down & soon it will be winter - stay warm & enjoy, and once again Happy Thanksgiving!

Harvest Time

We have plenty to do here at Sesen Farms!!  We have been collecting seeds from the harvest & freezing and canning our goods!  Fall is here & there is a chill in the air.  We have yet to harvest our gigantic pumpkins but if anyone is interested come on down & pick one up!  One of our Rabbits just had babies 2 days ago, she had a litter of 14!  Right now we have rabbits & chickens for sale as well as Turkeys just in time for Thanksgiving!  Once the field is completely harvested we plan to let Big Pig frolick throughout & root through what is left (we know she will love it).  The chickens have slowed down with their egg production and we have stopped selling them for the rest of this season...but come next season we should have a great supply of eggs considering the fact that we now have hundereds of chickens.  Now is the time to stock up on hay & wood for the fire place, we have a feeling it may be a chilly one this year, so keep warm!

Many More New Additions

The farm keeps getting busier by the day.  We just acquired a whole new set of animals from someone here in Oliver who needs time to get other things in order.  We have a 300 pound pig, a bunch of rabbits, homing pigeons, 2 ducks, more Turkeys and Chickens along with a couple of peacocks.  We have been busy setting these animals up & getting to know them.  Yesterday we took a long drive out to pick up a milking goat & this morning we milked her & now we have fresh goats milk in our fridge!  Along with the new baby things are in full swing.  Sadly we had our first encounter with a nasty Raccoon, he managed to get one of our Turkeys but were making sure it will never be possible to do again.  So between collecting seeds & picking our garden & setting up the animals we do not have time for much else.  If anyone is interested in fresh basil, tomatoes, beets, carrots, zucchini or potatoes...come on down or call us @ 250.498.4746 - soon we hope to be able to sell goats and pigs here and there as well!

Welcome Matteo to the Farm

It is a pleasure to announce the new addition to the Manazza family !! Matteo Aldo Manazza arrived on July 25th 2010 at 7:08 weighing at 6lbs and 14 oz. He is the cutest thing I have ever seen. Maria is struggling this few days trying to recuperate from birth and feeding the baby but just like a horse she keeps on trekking.

The farm is doing well and there is lots of life here. You can come and see the new Turkey mobile and the Chicken mobile they are going thru the berry field and they eat the weeds and grass and fertilize as we move them twice a day. We have 25 Turkeys and 50 Chickens for sale now. we are doing pre-orders and we will sell them live and do the butchering for free. So get you order in and we will set a pick up date and you will come and pick up your fresh pastured Hormone and Antibiotic free chicken. Get yours fast because we are selling them just as fast, call the farm to put the order in.

On other news, the weeds are quite huge, we had no idea that they would get out of control as they did. there is a lot of different kinds here in the okanagan and with all the watering and tilling of the field it seems that we stirred up years and years of weed seeds that were collected. Never the less with lots of hand weeding we managed half of the field to be under control and where we weeded, the vegetables are flourishing. The beets and the Potatoes are ready for pickings and the corn stalks are coming in just fine. we also have some beautiful tomato plants and lots and lots of carrots. The basil is coming back and last night we made some pesto and we both can't wait to try. Zucchini plants are producing well, my brother being the chef that he is made us Zucchini flowers stuffed with cheese and basil and then deep fried. Never had such a good delicacy. Good work Roberto.

The dogs are growing and they are starting to be more of the guard dogs that we need. Luna barks a bit too much at anything that moves or bother hers, like the chickens when they are too close to her bone, or the cat when she walks by. Oh well what can you do??

The Layers are growing well too I m just working on the egg mobile, I have stripped the insides and I m ready to build a roosting area and boxes for them to lay the eggs.

The Sun is hot and the plants and the animal are growing, what else do you need on a farm? Until next time we hope that you come by and visit thanks for reading !!
